Seven Bays Surf Coffee House
The brief
Seven Bays Coffee House is a surf café in St. Merryn, Cornwall. They needed t-shirt graphics for adults and kids that you would chuck on after being bashed around by the waves. Along with the illustration, I wrote the tagline: "Home of post-surf caffeine."
The thinking
The brief wrote itself really. A coffee shop for surfers, in Cornwall, called Seven Bays. The illustration had to capture that specific feeling - salt in your hair, board under your arm with a desperate need for caffeine.
The surfer getting barrelled mid-coffee was the obvious idea, which usually means it's the right one. A wave that says "FROTH" in the foam - froth being both the surf term and the thing on top of your flat white.
The arched badge format gave it structure without making it feel corporate.The adult version plays it straight. The kids version needed the same energy with a bit more chaos.
The outcome
The shirts went into production and onto real people in Cornwall. Always makes me smile when I see my stuff in real life. They sold out quickly and the designs were also released as limited batch of stickers.
